Ylva Snöfrid (born 1974, Umeå, Sweden) is a multidisciplinary artist known for her profound explorations of identity, rituals, and the boundary between reality and imagination. Her work spans painting, sculpture, and performance, often integrating autobiographical elements and symbolic imagery. Since childhood, Snöfrid has been fascinated by the concept of the "mirror world", in which she and her alter ego, Snöfrid, merge. This duality is central to her artistic practice, where she seeks to blur the boundaries between these worlds through rituals and art.
In 2017, Ylva Snöfrid underwent a significant transformation, merging herself with her alter ego, Snöfrid, in an 8-hour ritual during an exhibition at La Panacée, Montpellier. From that moment, she has worked as a single identity, Ylva Snöfrid, with rituals and ceremonies remaining central to her work. Between 2016 and 2021, she developed a holistic art project in Athens entitled The Painter's Studio in the Shadow World, which included more than 100 paintings, objects, and pieces of furniture. While this project was not open to the public, it laid an important foundation for her later work.
Snöfrid's work has been exhibited globally in prestigious institutions and galleries, including the 16th Istanbul Biennial, Performa 19 in New York, the Swiss Institute in New York, Kunsthal Charlottenborg in Copenhagen, Bonniers Konsthall in Stockholm, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Public Art Agency Sweden, Radicants at Palazzo Bollani in Venice, La Panacée in Montpellier, and the Swedish Institute in Paris (2024).
With her introspective and philosophical approach, Snöfrid invites audiences to partake in her rituals and reflections on human existence and the mysteries of life. Her artworks offer a unique experience: they are not only visually captivating but also conceptually profound, enriched with historical meaning.
